Hunting in Cameroon
Photo-Safari and hunting amateurs will spend a pleasant time in Cameroon.Bewae! Hunting is governed by special legislations that require strict compliance. Certain animals are fully protected and others partially.
Non-resident hunters can bring in duty-free, for a limited duration, shot-guns or rifles subject to paying import duties and taxes and duties on ammunition and obtaining annual permits to hunt and carry firearms. Rifle owners must, in addition, be covered by unlimited third-party insurance. They also require a temporary import license issued by the Minister of Territorial Administration and Cameroon Embassies abroad and Divisional Officers in the border areas. Upon presentation of this authorization the tourist may bring into the country for a maximum duration of three months:
- Two rifles;
- One shotgun;
- One lady's gun (e.g.5.5);
- Corresponding ammunition up 50 cartridges per weapon. Ammunition used in Cameroon is liable to 20% tax on the value thereof.
There are two kinds of hunting permits:
- The small-game permit authorizes the killing of some unprotected and certain protected species;
- The big-game permit authorizes, in addition to unprotected species, the killing of a strictly limited number of specified species.
Before organizing a hunting party, it is absolutely necessary to get documentation from the Conservator of Forest, North Province,P.O. Box 126, Garoua, the Ministry of Agriculture or from the Delegation General for Tourism, Yaoundé.
Fully protected species:
- MAMMALS: Caracal, water cherrotain,chimpanzee, mountain reedbuck, white matled colobus, elephant (tusks under 5kg.), pygmy elephant, giraffe, gorilla, cheetah, manatee, lion panther, leopard, lemurs, (potto, galago,etc.), orycterope, black rhinoceros.
- BIRDS: Ostrich, shoe-bill, secretary-bird, serpent-eater, all sorts of vultures.The eggs of these species are also fully protected as well as small animals and the eggs of partially protected birds.
Partially protected species:
- MAMMALS: bongo, bubals, buffalos (forest and savannah species), yellow- backed duiker, Buffoon's kob, reed-buck, water-buck, colobus (other than the white mantled species) bleesebok, Derby eland, elephants (trusks over 5km.), korine gazelle, harnessed antelope, hippotamus, hippotragus, mandrill, pangolin, situtunga.
- BIRDS: Egret, great Abyssinian hornbill, cattle egret, marabou.
- REPTILES: Crocodiles, great python, vegan.
Restrictions on killing
Partially protected animals whatever their species, are subject to the following restrictions:
- It is prohibited to kill more than two animals of the same species or more than four different species on the same day.
- It is prohibited to kill more than 15 animals of different species in the same week (7 consecutive days).
Adult, male partially protected species may be killed subject to the category of hunting permit held, as per the following table.
