Douala is where you first land in the littoral. As the hub and gateway to Cameroon, by air and sea, Douala is bustling with activity. It is one of the most important ports along the West African coast and has intense traffic. It also has an airport used by most of the major international airlines. Douala is of great interest from the tourist point of view because of its monuments, a museum with a wealth of exhibits, its international class hotels, and its cosmopolitan districts. The bridge spanning the wouri river, the Reunification Stadium, the cathedral in the centre of the city, the numerous plants in the Bassa industrial zone, the "bois des Singes" etc... are worth visiting. From the belfry of the cathedral we can view the whole of Douala, Bonaberi and in fine weather, Mount Cameroon which rises to 4,070 metres.
Excursion may be organized from Douala to Nkongsamba which is to the North or to Edea which is further inland or Kribi to the south. Kribi was formally a German port and it is the most picturesque site along the coast, with its beaches bordered by coconut palms which, on more than one score, recall the Polynesian coasts. The climate in Kribi through is drier than in Douala and one gets to Kribi through Edea, along a 115 km all weather road. Victoria presently call Limbe another coastal town, is also accessible by road from Douala. The town is of interest as a seaside resort.
