Southern Cameroon, Forest Zone
This is the forest zone with many large rivers. Yaoundé, the beautiful capital, is the most important crossroads in Cameroon. Yaoundé is linked to Douala in the south and Ngaoundere in the north by railway and air. There are road networks from Yaoundé - Bertoua, leading Berberati in the Central African Republic (there are planes flying Yaoundé- Bertoua); Yaoundé - Obala- Tibati- Ngaoundere-Garoua-Maroua, leading to Njamen, Chad; Yaounde - Edea - Douala.
To the south, there is a 45 km tarred road up to Mbalmayo and then there is a bifurcation to Sangmelima (167 km from Yaoundé) and the other branch, the "cocoa road" leads to Gabon and Equatorial Guinea. Lastly, Yaoundé is linked to the west by the Bafia road.
One-day excursions could be arranged around Yaoundé:
- to the Nachtigal and Monatélé Falls on River Sanaga;
- to Ebogo on River Nyong, near Mbalmayo;
- to the Pigmy grotto (Akok-Bekoé) and to "Villa Carde" near Akono.
Continuing east, towards the Congo and Central African frontiers, the tourist will have the opportunity to hunt small game in the thick forests where you can still find gorillas, monkeys and elephants.
